Fireworks displays are one of the most beloved parts of Independence Day festivities. As we celebrate Fireworks Eye Safety Month this June, your expert optometrist from Opti-Care is here to share five ways to protect your eyes:
1. Watch a Professional Show Rather Than Hosting Your Own
We suggest enjoying authorized, public fireworks displays rather than buying your own fireworks. Professional shows are handled by certified pyrotechnicians with the knowledge, skills, and experience to safely light different types of firecrackers and fireworks.
2. Always Wear Proper Safety Eyewear
Your trusted eye doctor recommends wearing polycarbonate eyewear when engaging in fireworks-related activities. These lenses feature superior impact resistance and durability for your enhanced protection.
3. Keep a Safe Distance From the Fireworks Grounds
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests staying at least a 500-feet away from the area where the fireworks or firecrackers are being lighted. This reduces your risk of sustaining fireworks-induced eye injuries.
4. Don’t Underestimate Sparklers and “Duds”
Many people are under the mistaken impression that sparklers are totally safe—but did you know sparklers can reach a temperature of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit? Mishandled, sparklers can cause severe burns and injuries.
You should also avoid picking up “dud” fireworks since they may still ignite after a few minutes. If you need to remove a “dud,” douse it with water before approaching. Afterward, wash your hands thoroughly to remove gunpowder traces that could irritate your eyes.
5. Seek Immediate Medical Treatment If Injured
If you sustain a fireworks-related injury, go to your trusted eye center as soon as possible. Refrain from rubbing, rinsing, or applying pressure on the affected eye. Avoid taking or applying medications that could worsen your condition. We’ll perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine the most appropriate remedy.
