Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a non-invasive treatment method for refractive errors seen as an alternative to wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses. The treatment is very effective, but it does involve an adjustment period that some patients find a bit challenging.
Here are some tips to help you prepare for ortho-k:
Wearing Ortho-K Lenses for the First Time
Inserting ortho-k gas-permeable lenses is similar to inserting regular soft contact lenses, except that you’ll need to apply a few lubricating drops first. First, clean the lenses thoroughly and check for chips or scratches. Next, simply hold your eyelids open and gently place a lens on each eye. The lenses may feel strange at first, but you will adjust after a little while.
Removing the Lenses on the First Morning
Taking gas-permeable lenses off requires a special remover typically supplied by the eye doctor. Don’t worry because it’s painless and easy to use. You’ll need to apply more lubricating drops and then wait 10 minutes before removing the lenses.
You’ll have an appointment with your optometrist soon after beginning treatment, and they’ll assess how the lenses worked. Depending on their assessment, the optometrist may give you new lenses that are slightly different in shape.
Night Vision
Some patients, particularly those with large pupils, notice halos and glare when wearing ortho-k lenses in the evening. This typically occurs because the pupil enlarges in low light and allows light rays from outside the lens treatment zone to enter the eye. You can expect this to improve in one or two months, as the effect of the ortho-k treatment stabilizes. If the halos and glare are still noticeable, you can use special eye drops to improve the condition. Make sure to consult your doctor regarding this matter.
