Whether they are used for work or leisure, mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other related devices have become an integral part of our everyday lives. On the downside, prolonged use can compromise your visual health and comfort. Opti-Care, your local provider of dry eye treatments, discusses everything you need to know about computer vision syndrome in today’s post.
How Computer Vision Syndrome Affects Your Eyes
Computer vision syndrome (CVS), also known as digital eye strain, describes a group of vision-related problems resulting from the extended use of computers and mobile devices. While heavy use of gadgets is the primary culprit, other things such as inadequate lighting, excessive glare and poor posture can also contribute to CVS.
The longer you stare at the screen of the laptop monitor or touchscreen phone, the more likely you are to experience symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain. Visit your eye doctor as soon as possible for an eye exam to confirm if you have CVS.
Managing Digital Eye Strain
The most effective way to prevent CVS or digital eye strain is to stop using gadgets altogether. However, given how ubiquitous these devices are, it is an impractical idea to consider. Fortunately, you can do a few things to manage the symptoms and protect your eyes from further strain:
- Reduce Glare – Check that your overhead lighting and desk lamps aren’t causing glare. If they are, consider using a screen glare filter to decrease light reflected from your screen.
- Observe Proper Posture – Use an ergonomic chair with back support so you can sit up straight with feet flat on the floor and your arms resting on the chair arms.
- Practice the 20-20-20 Rule – Every 20 minutes of screen time, rest your eyes for 20 seconds while staring at an object from a distance of at least 20 feet.
- Protect Your Eyes – Blink more often or use over-the-counter eye drops to keep your eyes lubricated.
