Advancements in technology have yielded vision correction methods that are more effective and convenient than ever before–such as LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis). In addition to our wide selection of eyeglasses and contact lenses, we also LASIK evaluation, referral, and post-surgery care. This includes determining if you are a good candidate for this procedure. Here are four basic requirements you need to meet:
1. Appropriate Age:
Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet allowed any laser-assisted eye procedures for individuals under the age of 18. If you are under the minimum age, we typically suggest wearing prescription eyewear for the time being.
2. Good Eye Health:
We will perform a comprehensive eye exam to assess your overall visual health. Factors that could undermine your candidacy for LASIK include corneal irregularities, frequent lens prescription changes, or active eye infections. If you have any of these conditions, we will prioritize managing them first. After treating them, we’ll then re-evaluate you for LASIK.
3. Stable Overall Wellbeing:
To be a good candidate for LASIK, you need to have strong overall health in addition to strong visual health. Uncontrolled pre-existing or undetected underlying conditions may impair your immune system, compromising your healing post-LASIK surgery.
4. Adequate Corneal Thickness:
LASIK involves surgically creating a superficial flap to aid in modifying your corneal irregularities. This is why it’s important that your cornea is at least 0.55 mm thick. This ensures the method’s effectiveness and your improved visual acuity. If we find that your corneal layers have insufficient depth, we may recommend other equally effective vision correction options instead.
The best way to know if you are a good LASIK candidate is to have your eyes evaluated by your expert optometrist. Call us today at (410) 600-3173 to schedule an appointment. We serve families in Westminster and Marriottsville, MD, and nearby communities.
